From the Guidance Office:

College Entrance Test Dates

Before a student is accepted into a college, he/she must provide the college with a score from the ACT or SAT.  While most colleges will accept either test result, the student should consult with the college or university as to a preference.  Registration forms are available in the Guidance Office or they can be completed on-line.  The high school code number for both tests:  360-535.

ACT: Cost: $29.00 (the writing portion is an additional $14.00).

ACT WRITING

Go to act.org to find out whether your college requires you to take the writing portion of the ACT.  Approximately half of the schools in the U.S. either require or recommend that you take it.

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT

The Guidance Office is sponsoring an informational meeting for parents of seniors and any others who would like to attend.  Mr. Lawrence Matthews, Director of Financial Aid at Bluffton University, will conduct the meeting.  He will be talking about the financial aid process and the FAFSA form.  This meeting will be held on November 29th at 7:00 P.M. in the high school cafeteria.

SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS SHOULD REGISTER FOR A PIN

If you are a senior who will be filing a FAFSA form for financial aid, register for a PIN for you and both of your parents at www.pin.ed.gov.  It is recommended that this be done in the fall.  The PIN is used for electronic signatures when filing the FAFSA.

PSAT

The PSAT will be given here at Bluffton High School on October 18, 2006.  The PSAT is the preliminary test to the regular SAT.  It is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation competition.  This test is offered to our sophomores and juniors.  Cost is $12.00.

OHIO GRADUATION TEST

Any student in grade 11 or 12, who has not yet passed all five parts of the Ohio Graduation Test, will have another opportunity to pass any failed parts of the test during the week of October 23.  Once a student has passed all parts of the test, he/she has fulfilled the obligation and no longer is required to take the test.  Any student, in grade 11 or 12 who is new to the state of Ohio, must take this state-mandated test.

COLLEGE CAREER DAY

Members of our junior class will be visiting Rhodes State College Career Day in Lima on Friday, December 8th.  Each student will be asked to pick three careers of interest from a list of more than fifty possibilities.  Each career session will feature a person, who works in the particular field, talking about his/her job. Type of work, job setting, education needed, and benefits earned will be discussed.  These juniors will be leaving BHS by bus at 8:30 A.M. and returning to school after lunch.

EXCHANGE STUDENTS

This year at BHS we have three foreign exchange students.  They are: Mikhail Korolev from Russia, Rury Machiya from Japan, and Irene Serrano from Spain.  We are fortunate to have these three young people with us this year—it certainly gives our students excellent exposure to people who live in other countries.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

The Ohio Career Information System (OCIS) is available for your use through Bluffton High School.  This is an excellent source of information on colleges and universities, occupations, and scholarships.  To access this site, go to the BHS website and click on OCIS.  The user name is Bluffton and the password is ohiocis03.  This material may be accessed either at home or at school.  The scholarship information is under the heading of Financial Aid.
