Sixth grade art: Sixth graders are experiencing art “through the Ages” by starting with cave paintings from 35,000 years ago and working their way up the time-line of history to contemporary times. Each project relates to an era of human history, with “cave-art relief” creatures in clay starting the nine weeks, then moving into hieroglyphics of Egypt, experiencing Grecian pottery, Roman tiles, Heraldry, map-making, perspective drawing, impressionism and cartooning.

1st week: "Art, Our First Language." We will look at the cave paintings, and other artifacts from prehistoric times and discuss the dawning of communication, humans as creative beings and shelter. We will create a slab relief in clay of an animal, then add color to bisqueware. 2nd week: "Art, Our First Language." We will look at the fantasy creatures that appear in ancient Babylonian art. We will also look at the animal symbols in Egyptian art, then invent a creature-combination of two natural animals. |
