Course Description
Latin I Credit - 1 Unit One Year Course Elective 9-12 Pre-requisites: None
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the basic structure of Latin and to learn enough vocabulary to be able to translate with comparative ease; to explore the ways a large part of the English vocabulary has been derived from Latin; to learn about the culture of the ancient Romans; and to develop an awareness of the relevance of a study of Latin to our everyday living. The student is advised to have a good comprehension of English grammar.
Latin II Credit - 1 Unit One Year Course Elective 10-12 Pre-requisites: Latin I
This course is designed to continue learning the structure of Latin and to enable the student to translate more difficult passages; to learn more about the culture of the Romans; to continue learning English words derived from Latin; to learn of the history of the Greeks whose contribution to the Roman culture was significant; and to learn something of the art and the architecture of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Mythology will be introduced more in depth.
Latin III Credit - 1 Unit One Year Course Elective 11-12 Pre-requisites: Latin I & II, Teacher Approval
This course will concentrate on the reading of Latin writers. Greek and Roman history is explored more fully. Stories are a large part of the curriculum. Writers may include Cicero, Livy, Pliny, Ovid and Virgil.
